The Teatro Lirico di Cagliari Orchestra Founded in 1933 by Renato Fasano, the orchestra was created to give life to the very full concert and opera programmes in the theatres of Cagliari. Over the years it has enjoyed successful working relationships with the most acclaimed Italian conductors, among whom are Tullio Serafin, Vittorio Gui, Antonino Votto, Guido Cantelli, Franco Ferrara, Franco Capuana and Willy Ferrero and with composors such as Ottorino Respighi, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Riccardo Zandonai and Alfredo Casella. The appearances of Lorin Maazel, Lovro von Matacic, Claudio Abbado, Sergiu Celibidache and Riccardo Muti and the collaborations with Gioconda De Vito, Leonid Kogan, Henryk Szering, Andrés Navarra, Dino Ciani, Maria Tipo, Nikita Magaloff, Wilhem Kempff and Martha Argerich date back to the 50’s and 60’s. Recently the orchestra has collaborated with Georges Prêtre, Emmanuel Krivine, Mstislav Rostropovich, Ton Koopman, Iván Fischer, Frans Brüggen, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Sir Neville Marriner, Christopher Hogwood, Radovan Vlatkovic, Maurice Bourgue, Kim Kashkashian, Viktoria Mullova, Truls Mørk, Sabine Meyer, Vadim Repin, Yuri Bashmet and Salvatore Accardo, amongst others. From 1999 to 2005 Gérard Korsten was the Principal conductor of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, where he directed a programmes of concerts and operas including the national premieres of Die Ägyptische Helena (Elena Egizia) by Richard Strauss, Euryanthe by Carl Maria von Weber, A Village Romeo and Juliet by Frederick Delius and Alfonso und Estrella by Franz Schubert In January 2005 the orchestra was conducted with great success by Cristian Mandeal for the Italian premiere of Oedipe by George Enescu and in January last year by Emmanuel Villaume for the Italian premiere of Chérubin by Jules Massenet. The orchestra has regularly collaborated with Lorin Maazel, touring Europe in 1999 with Andrea Bocelli and Lucia Mazzaria , performing a series of concerts including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in versione multimediale. In 2002 the Orchestra represented Italy in the Italienische Nacht event organized by the Bayerischer Rundfunk, at the Gasteig in Munich, which was broadcast live by Bavarian radio. Last July a concert in honour of the President of the Italian Republic Carlo Aziglio Ciampi was excellently directed by Yves Abel. The orchestra has recorded Die Feen (The Fairies) by Richard Wagner, Dalibor by Bedrich Smetana for Dynamic, which were awarded, respectively, Best Italian Opera Recording 1997 by «Musica e Dischi» and Timbre de Platine - by «Opéra International» in January 2001 and also Cerevicki (Gli stivaletti) by Petr Il'ic Cajkovskij, Die Ägyptische Helena (Elena Egizia) by Richard Strauss, Goyescas by Enrique Granados and La vida breve by Manuel de Falla, La Passione secondo Giovanni by Johann Sebastian Bach, Euryanthe by Carl Maria von Weber, Opricnik by Petr Il'ic Cajkovskij, Alfonso und Estrella by Franz Schubert, Hans Heiling by Heinrich Marschner. For the Rai the orchestra recorded La Bohème in 1998, broadcast all over the world and Don Pasquale in 2003 (recorded as a DVD by Rai Trade). House conductor: Cristiano Del Monte

The Teatro Lirico di Cagliari Chorus

Since the Second World War, the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari Chorus has performed over one hundred operas, and has developed a wide symphonic repertoire.
Among its directors have been Bonaventura Somma, Roberto Benaglio and Giorgio Kirschner. From 1997 to January 2005, it was directed by Paolo Vero and from June 2005 to December 2007 by Andrea Faidutti. The current director of the chorus is Fulvio Fogliazzi appointed in January 2008.
The Chorus’s willingness and ability to perform works from varying eras and styles and in the original language is always much appreciated by conductors and directors.
The chorus has dedicated particular attention to works by twentieth century composers such as Le Roi David by Arthur Honegger, Stabat Mater by Francis Poulenc, Assassinio nella cattedrale by Ildebrando Pizzetti, Sinfonia di Salmi by Igor Stravinskij, Coro di morti by Goffredo Petrassi, La visita meravigliosa by Nino Rota and Stabat Mater by Karol Szymanowski.
The following stand out among recent seasons’ performances: Hector Berlioz’s Te deum conducted by Gabor Ötvös, Gustav Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, conducted by Alun Francis, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass conducted by Ton Koopman, the Requiem and The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn, conducted by Gérard Korsten, the St John and St Matthew Passions by Johann Sebastian Bach, and conducted by Peter Schreier, the Opera Sebastian, taken from The Martyr of Saint-Sébastien by Claude Debussy ( the first Italian production), conducted by Georges Prêtre, A Village Romeo and Juliet by Frederick Delius, conducted by Gérard Korsten, the Italian premiere of Oedipus by George Enescu, conducted by Cristian Mandeal and the Italian premiere of Chérubin by Jules Massenet and conducted by Emmanuel Villaume.
The Chorus has collaborated with renowned directors such as Dario Fo, Beni Montresor, Lorenzo Mariani, Luca Ronconi, Hennings Brockhaus, Alberto Fassini, Denis Krief, José Carlos Plaza, Stephen Medcalf, Pier Luigi Pizzi and Graham Vick. Under the guidance of Lorin Maazel, Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th Symphony was successfully performed in 1999, and the following year in versione multimediale.
In 2005, together with the Teatro Lirico Orchestra, the Chorus represented Italy in the Italienische Nacht event organized by the Bayerischer Rundfunk, at the Gasteig in Munich, which was broadcast live by Bavarian Radio.
The performances of la Liturgia di San Giovanni Crisostomo by Petr Il'ic Cajkovskij and l Vespro in memory of S. Smolenskij by Sergei Rachmaninov were also extremely well received. In June 2003, the Chorus performed some pieces from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin with the New York Philharmonic directed by Lorin Maazel.
