L’elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti on tour in Sardinia

On Friday 16th July at 9pm, in the Parvis of San Pantaleo Cathedral in Dolianova, Teatro Lirico’s musical activities in Sardinia continue with the performance, in concert form, of a narrated and sung anthology of the opera L’elisir d’amore, melodrama giocoso in two acts, with libretto by Felice Romani, taken from the novel Le Philtre by Eugène Scribe and music by Gaetano Donizetti.

Two prestigious casts, made up of singers from the Teatro Lirico Chorus alternate for the performances: Beatrice Murtas/Graziella Ortu (Adina), Luca Sannai/Oscar Piras (Nemorino), Gionata Gilio/Antonio Vincenzo Serra (Belcore), Antonello Pippia/Antonio Vincenzo Serra ( Dr Dulcamara) and Loredana Aramu/Luana Spinola (Giannetta). The actor Simeone Latini is the narrator.

Alessandro D’Agostini conducts the Teatro Lirico Orchestra and Chorus. The chorus master is Fulvio Fogliazza.

The further performances are: Saturday 17th July at 9pm at the Teatro La Vetreria in Cagliari-Pirri; Monday 19th July at 9pm at the Arena Mirastelle in Carbonia; Tuesday 20th July at 9pm in the Town Square in Pula; Thursday 22nd July at 9pm at the Centro Santa Barbara in Iglesias; Friday 23rd July at 9pm in the Parvis of San Michele Arcangelo Church in Collinas and Saturday 24th July at 9pm in the Central Square in Segariu.

L’elisir d’amore, performed for the first time on 12th May 1832 at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan (now Teatro Lirico), was met with much applause from the public and critics from the first evening and was performed for thirty-two times. This opera is one of Gaetano Donizetti’s most refined aboveall for the orchestra score and is a personal elaboration of the comical style through the introduction of a sentimental element, which in contrast to Rossini’s serious opera, leads again to the larmoyant trend of the French opéra-comique.

The performance is subsidized by the Fondazione Banco di Sardegna and is realised in collaboration with the Regione Autonoma della Sardegna and the Town Councils of Cagliari, Carbonia, Collinas, Dolianova, Iglesias, Pula and Segariu.
