The Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company in “A Midsummer night’s Dream” by Mendelssohn at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari
One of the most renowned and prestigious ballet companies in the world, the Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company are on stage as part of the 2009 Opera and Ballet Season in “A Midsummer night’s Dream”. The ballet, in two acts and six scenes, is based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare, with music by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, in a Teatro alla Scala production.
David Garforth conducts the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari Orchestra and Chorus. The choreography by George Balanchine is dated 1962 and the sets and costumes are by Luisa Spinatelli. Fulvio Fogliazza is Chorus Master.
The main performers in A Midsummer night’s Dream are some the most famous étoiles and guest artists, together with the first ballerinas and soloists from the Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company, alternating for the performances: Polina Semionova (23rd)/Francesca Podini (24th, 26th, 30th)/Gilda Gelati (25th, 28th, 29th) (Titania); Roberto Bolle (23rd, 24th)/Antonino Sutera (25th, 28th, 30th)/Alessandro Grillo (26th, 29th) (Oberon); Massimo Murru (23rd, 24th)/Mick Zeni (25th, 28th, 29th)/Gabriele Corrado (26th, 30th) (Cavaliere di Titania) and Riccardo Massimi (23rd, 24th, 26th)/Maurizio Licitra (25th, 28th)/Federico Fresi (29th, 30th) (Puck).
With the participation of young students from ballet schools around Sardinia in the roles of the twenty-four elves.
Makhar Vaziev directs the Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company, which appears in Cagliari in its entirety for the first time, in an atmosphere of great anticipation and emotions, to celebrate the two-hundredth anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s birth (Hamburg, 1809 – Lipsia, 1847), with one of the most sumptuous and elegant choreographies and staging of all times.
