From Saturday 17th May 2008 to Tuesday 29th July 2008, the stalls foyer of the Teatro Lirico, Cagliari hosts the exhibition Costantino Nivola: un artista, una vita (an artist, a life) for the VIII Festival di Sant’Efisio.

This personal exhibition, which is part of the events organized for the twenty anniversary of his death, is dedicated to Costantino Nivola (Orani, 5th July 1911 - Long Island, 5th May 1988). Nivola left Orani, Nuoro, and became well-known all over the world for the linear dryness and rationality of his art, which was always firmly rooted in Sardinian origins.

The 55 photographic panels on display relate the main stages in the artist’s work, Sa Itria Church in Orani and piazza Satta in Nuoro, his sincere involvement in the community, the comparison and association with other artists such as Le Corbusier, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, and include the extremely intense shots of family life. To complete the exhibition: a blow-up (3x1.50m) of piazza Sebastiano Satta in Nuoro, 3 sculptures, incuding the monumental male Figure and the bronze Widow that are being shown for the first time in Sardinia, some videos and panels with passages from his “Memorie di Orani” (Memoirs of Orani). An extraordinary international artist who, in spirit, never left Sardinia can be appreciated through this exhibition.

The exhibition opening ceremony was held on Friday 16th May 2008 at 7pm.

The exhibition catalogue, edited by Grafiche Ghiani, includes the presentations by Gabriella Locci and by the Foundation ‘Costantino Nivola from Orani’, a critical text by Ugo Collu, president of the Nivola Foundation, with over 50 black and white photographs portraying the artist’s life, the colour illustrations of every piece that is on show and a detailed chronology of his life and works.
